Dier: We’ll give fans reason to cheer

- By Rob Draper

ERIC DIER insists that England will win back the fans at the World Cup.

Some of the crowd at Wembley on Thursday seemed more interested in throwing paper aeroplanes than celebrating qualifying for the finals.

But Dier said: ‘Fans are hard to please sometimes, but we’ll do our best. We had one objective which was to win the game and qualify for the World Cup, and we did that. I hope everyone sticks with us and can support this team. We are trying our best to do well and you can’t say anyone is not giving their best. And that’s all you can do really.’

Jack Butland will get his chance in goal tonight against Lithuania. He said: ‘I can only do so much at club level, so this is an opportunity to show what I can do. Joe [Hart has] rightly had the No 1 spot for a long time. I’m here to challenge that.’
