TONY ADAMS – age 50 Arsenal legend who faced Italy the day after his 31th birthday and was encouraged by Hoddle to drop deep and initiate play. Had difficult spell as Granada manager in La Liga last season. GARETH SOUTHGATE – age 47 Recovered from missing penalty at Euro 96 to win 50 England caps and is now manager. Booked England’s place at the World Cup by beating Slovenia on Thursday.
GRAEME LE SAUX – age 48 Missed Euro 96 with injury but recalled by Hoddle, who always
preferred one of his wing-backs to be a more natural defender. Became panellist on Sky TV’s current affairs show The Pledge. DAVID BATTY – age 48 Defensive midfielder who gave Paul Gascoigne freedom. Prefers superbikes to football these days. PAUL GASCOIGNE – age 50 Talent of a generation. Left out of England’s ’98 World Cup squad and mental health issues since retirement are well-documented.
PAUL INCE – age 49 Experience of Italian football with Inter Milan was considered key against Del Piero and Maldini. Managed Blackburn and MK Dons. Son Tom plays for Huddersfield.
TEDDY SHERINGHAM – age 51 Partnered Ian Wright as Alan Shearer was injured, had just joined Manchester United from Spurs. Will leave for India this week to manage in Kolkata. IAN WRIGHT – age 53 Agonisingly hit the post in the final minute from an acute angle. Now pairs up with Shearer and Gary Lineker on Match of the Day.
