Taylor wants football job No24
GILLINGHAM interim manager Peter Taylor is keen to extend a remarkable career that has seen him take on 23 different jobs including three spells with England. Taylor, 64, was director of football at Priestfield until Adrian Pennock departed last month and needs a result against Portsmouth today to boost his chances of being appointed manager on a permanent basis by chairman Paul Scally.
Mansfield’s Steve Evans, Cambridge manager Shaun Derry and former Bristol City boss Keith Millen are also in the frame.
Taylor said: ‘I’ve enjoyed coaching the players again, I’ve never hidden the fact it’s the best part of the week. I’m a football man.
‘I honestly don’t know what the chairman will do after the Portsmouth game but I don’t want this to be the end of my time in football. I still have a lot to offer.
‘I could revert back to my old position at Gillingham but that would depend on how it works with the next manager. ’
The former international has been in charge of England under-20s and under21s and led the senior team for the friendly against Italy in 2000 when he made David Beckham captain.
