Furious Hamilton calls for action as Mercedes team-mates are robbed

- From Jonathan McEvoy IN SAO PAULO By Rob Draper

LEWIS Hamilton has accused Formula One’s rulers of complacency after his Mercedes team were robbed at gunpoint on their journey from the Interlagos race circuit.

The i ncident happened at 10pm on Friday as members of the world champion’s crew — mostly mechanics — were making their way through dense traffic to their Sao Paulo hotel.

One had a gun pointed at his head while laptops, passports and wallets were stolen — one of three Formula One-related muggings in the build- up to today’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who was travelling separately, said: ‘I was horrified to hear what had happened. The frustrating thing is I have been in F1 for 10 years and every year that has happened to someone in the paddock.

‘It’s for the people at the top to take action to keep everyone safe. It’s no good just the bosses or myself having security; everyone needs to be looked after.’

This weekend alone, officials from motorsport’s governing body FIA were targeted by hooded youths who tapped a gun at the window of their car. However, the windows were bullet-proof and the muggers could not get inside.

Williams staff also witnessed a robbery ahead of them in traffic. The assailants then walked towards their car before turning away. Nobody was hurt in any of the three flashpoints.

Formula One’ s owners, Liberty Media, said they would issue new safety guidelines in due course. Mercedes, however, have already decided they will travel in convoy with a police escort. ANGUS GUNN, Lewis Cook and Dominic Solanke are in line for a full England call-up today, with Phil Jones withdrawing from the squad. All three are being promoted from the Under 21 squad which beat Ukraine 2-0 on Friday night. Goalkeeper Gunn replaces Jack Butland who has returned to Stoke with a broken finger while Cook comes in to bolster midfield. Southgate said: ‘It would be good experience for a couple of the under-21s.’
