If you meet a VW driver in a car park… be Very Wary

- By David Jarvis

THEY straddle car park bays, cause prangs and illegally occupy disabled spaces. And there’s a strong chance they will be driving a Volkswagen.

A survey has revealed the worst drivers in Britain for causing car park mayhem are likely to own the best-selling German brand.

They also top the table for driving the wrong way round car parks and leaving their vehicles too close to others.

The survey shows that VW drivers are responsible for ten per cent of all car park transgressions. Owners of Vauxhalls came second (8.3 per cent) followed by drivers of Fords (7.9 per cent), BMWs (7.1 per cent) and Audis (6.3 per cent). However, Porsche, Suzuki and Seat owners can pride themselves on being the most considerate.

A shameful quarter of all vehicles in disabled bays did not display an official Blue Badge permit, according to the survey. In total, an astonishing one tenth of drivers have no regard for car park rules, with 4x4s being the worst offender by car style.

Part of the problem is that parking bays have remained around 2.4 m wide over the years, while today’s large 4x4s measure around 2 m.

Su Karki, marketing manager at insurer Direct Line, which conducted the survey at car parks around the country, said: ‘Many of us are leading very busy lives and perhaps this may be leading to some motorists rushing, and in turn, parking across bay lines or failing to observe the direction of travel.

‘As many of the claims we see are for incidents in car parks, we urge motorists to take the time to manoeuvre carefully and park within bay lines, as well as observe the flow of traffic.’
