Sgt. Pepper named UK’s most popular album ever
THE Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has been named Britain’s most popular album of all time.
The seminal record, released in 1967 and featuring classic songs such as A Day In The Life and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, topped a chart of Britain’s bestselling LPs with sales of 5.34 million.
Adele’s 21 was second with 5.11 million sales, Oasis’s (What’s The Story) Morning Glory third (4.94 million) and Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon fourth (4.47 million).
A countdown of the UK’s topselling 40 LPs, which ranked albums by their physical sales, downloads and streams, was read out by Paul Gambaccini on BBC Radio 2 yesterday to mark National Album Day.
