‘Abortions at home’ row grows after risk claims

- By Stephen Adams HEALTH CORRESPONDENT

CAMPAIGNERS have called on the Government to ‘urgently review’ moves to let women take abortion pills at home after a study suggested it could double the rate of complications.

From the end of the year, women in England will be able to take the second of two abortion pills at home, rather than in a clinic.

The move has been described as more ‘compassionate’, but researchers found its introduction in Sweden coincided with a dramatic rise in complications such as infections and bleeding.

John Deighan, deputy chief executive of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, said: ‘This study appears to back what we have been saying all along – that home abortions are risky for women. We call on the Government to urgently review their decision.’

More than 100,000 women a year in England have an abortion, with most taking pills.

The Department of Health and Social Care said the move would go ahead.
