Waitrose to deliver groceries in just two hours

- By Neil Craven

WAITROSE shoppers could soon avoid having to step out for their posh nosh as the retailer joins the express delivery war.

The Waitrose Rapid service allows customers to order last-minute meals for delivery two hours later. The £5 service has launched in parts of South and West London and may be extended if it succeeds.

It is aimed at what has been called the ‘ultra convenience’ market, predominantly under-25year-olds, who are twice as likely as the over-65s to visit shops more than once a day.

Time-pressed shoppers can choose up to 20 items and then wait in for the delivery, which arrives within a one-hour preagreed time slot.

Ocado, which also delivers Waitrose products, recently hinted it may also start an express delivery service.

Supermarkets are trying to keep pace with Amazon’s Prime Now one-hour food delivery service.

Tesco’s one-hour service costs £7.99 while Sainsbury’s costs £4.99.
