JAMES DAUNT, 54: THEATRE-LOVER WHO SHUNS THE TELEVISION

-

Breakfast: ‘My breakfast was, “Have you done your homework?” and “Have you eaten something?” with a bowl of cereal.’

Family: Daunt’s oldest daughter is 20 – ‘She’s at university, we’ve done that one’ – and youngest is 15, in her GCSE year. ‘My wife works as well so we are all on full steam. I think nice happy families who are all trying to juggle everything can work quite well. Our youngest goes to a day school just up the road and it’s all very local.’

Interests: ‘We are, I’m afraid, typical Hampstead people. We go to the National Theatre and Hampstead Theatre quite a lot because the Tubes work really easily for us. We’ll go out once or twice a week. The Lehman Brothers play (The Lehman Trilogy) was completely fantastic and we are going to see the new David Hare (I’m Not Running). The only thing we don’t do is TV. We have a TV in the house but, literally, it’s turned on for Election night.’

Travel: ‘We go to Scotland every summer. We’ve been to the same place for 21 years. We drive because we need all the clobber. It’s heaven on Earth, swimming in the cold sea, fishing for mackerel. It is very wild and it has no mobile signal. Once you’re up there, you’re gone, that’s it. You can drop off the end of the world for a bit and nobody notices.’
