More referendums are the way forward
Peter Hitchens says he dislikes referendums, maintaining that they play no part in balancing our politics. But the EU vote allowed people to make a deliberate and democratic choice on a matter of national interest. It was the people’s choice, as opposed to General Elections, where most people are forced into using their vote to keep out the party they don’t want to see in office.
A new political party that would ‘rule by referendum’ is urgently required. In practice this would give voters a real influence in shaping our long-term future and making the country safe for future generations. Key issues that could be subject to referendums might range from restoring the death penalty through to abolishing soft justice and reducing foreign aid spending. Peter Warrilow, Lincoln
