GK: JOSE MOURINHO Father was capped by Portugal as a keeper but Jose lacked the ability to be a profession­al so became the Special One instead.

RB: ROY HODGSON Tonbridge. Gravesend. Maidstone. Ashford. Berea Park. Carshalton. Never played higher than the fifth tier but was the manager of Liverpool and England among others.

CB: MAURIZIO SARRI Played only at amateur level after fluffing trials at Torino and Fiorentina. As a coach, he twice took Napoli close to the Serie A title before joining Chelsea.

CB: LUIZ FELIPE SCOLARI So bad he was nicknamed, ‘wooden leg’. Yet led Brazil to the World Cup in 2002 and has just taken Palmeiras to their 10th league title.

LB: GRAHAM TAYLOR Played at Grimsby and Lincoln before leading Watford from the fourth division to the first in five years. He went on to manage England.

RM: RON ATKINSON Spent his career at Oxford before going on to win the League Cup with Villa and Sheffield Wednesday and two FA Cups with Manchester United.

CM: RAFA BENITEZ Failed to make grade at Real Madrid so spent his career at Parla and Linares. Has won two La Ligas, the Europa League and the Champions League among a host of honours as a manager.

CM: LOUIS VAN GAAL Flopped at Ajax so toiled away in second divisions of Belgium and Holland. That did not stop LVG winning the Champions League, the Bundesliga, La Liga and multiple Eredivisie titles.

LM: UNAI EMERY A handful of La Liga appearance­s with Real Sociedad but was never cut out for the top level as a player. As a coach, he won the Europa League three years in a row with Sevilla.

CM: SVEN-GORAN ERIKSSON Never played higher than Swedish second division but became the first manager to win league-and-cup doubles in three countries with Lazio, Benfica and Goteborg with whom he lifted the Uefa Cup.

CF: GERARD HOULLIER Player-manager for Le Touquet in the lower reaches of the French non-league. Since won Ligue 1 three times and the Uefa Cup with Liverpool.

MANAGER: ARRIGO SACCHI ‘I never realised that in order to become a jockey you have to be a horse first.’ Sacchi didn’t play profession­ally but led AC Milan to Serie A and back-to-back European Cups.
