Jones warns Scotland that he is out for revenge

- By Nik Simon

EDDIE JONES has vowed to inflict revenge on Scotland as England look to snatch the Six Nations crown from Wales’ grasp.

The Scots humiliated England in the Calcutta Cup last year, when skipper Greig Laidlaw ripped open his shirt singing the national anthem during boozy celebrations.

Skipper Owen Farrell was targeted in the tunnel before kick-off and Jones was also abused by Scottish fans at a train station. The England coach immediately turned his focus to the final round clash after yesterday’s 57-14 victory over Italy — claiming last year’s ‘carry on’ is still fresh in his memory.

‘They pulled our pants down badly last year so we have some work to do to make sure we finish the game with our pants up,’ said Jones.

‘We know it is their game of the year. We saw how they carried on last year after they beat us. We may have short memories, but sometimes you have longer memories.

‘I just remember everything that was said. I’m sure there are some great headlines somewhere. That’s all I have to say.’

Scotland have not won at Twickenham since 1983 and England could still claim the title if Wales lose at home to Ireland. Jones’ side blew their Grand Slam chances with their defeat by Wales in Cardiff — and Jones admitted he was at fault for the result.

‘We were very disappointed the last 30 minutes against Wales and it is hard to recover,’ said Jones. ‘You start to doubt yourself. Players and coaches get a lot of criticism, everyone knows better than we do. And you have got to stick to your guns and find the application to start again.

‘I am always dirty on myself. I don’t think I coached very well against Wales and I take responsibility. Do I doubt myself? I dunno. Probably not. But I was filthy about the way I coached.

‘Things in the game I should have adjusted more quickly to and I didn’t. That was disappointing for me.

‘I let the players down and it was good to see that we all worked hard and got ourselves right for this game.’

Jones also heaped praise on rookie winger Joe Cokanasiga, who was at the heart of England’s attack as they scored eight tries in the rout of Italy.

‘Possibly he can carry the ball in two hands sometimes’ joked Jones. ‘He is a young kid with great potential. We took him to Argentina in 2017 and he couldn’t do a training session. He has worked that hard to get himself right. He could be one of the best players in the world in the air.’
