One letter-writer last week said they were glad we now view women as much more than their physical attributes, unlike in the days of the Miss World contest. Why is it then that the beauty business has become such big business? Girls today have eyelash extensions and bee-sting lips, while older women strive for a youthful appearance with cosmetic treatments. Not very liberated, are they!

A correspond­ent last week was horrified that contestant­s used to have to turn around so their bottoms could be inspected. Today, millions of women wear trousers so that men can ‘admire’ them.
