But what are they thinking in Belarus?

-

FOOTBALL has ground to a halt around the globe but there is one corner of Europe where, bizarrely, the game is still being played.

Despite being on the edge of a continent ravaged by the deadly Covid-19, the Premier League season in Belarus kicked off last weekend and there is no sign of it being halted any time soon.

They are not even playing behind closed doors, with almost 1,000 people at the Stadyen Haradski yesterday to watch champions Dynamo Brest win 1-0 at Slutsk. There was precious little evidence of any social distancing and the goal was celebrated with a group hug.

Retired Belarus legend Alexander Hleb, once of Arsenal, described the lack of concern for coronavirus among players as ‘unbelievable’.

It is certainly a maverick stance from Belarus. The country’s president, Alexander Lukashenko, has dismissed the global health crisis as a ‘psychosis’, suggesting vodka and saunas as cures.
