TV FILMS OF THE WEEK
PAINT YOUR WAGON Sunday, BBC2, 2.50pm
Politically correct this 1969 film is not, what with two gold prospectors – Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood, both right – sharing one wife (Jean Seberg) and its marathon running time packed full of drinking, gambling and fistfights. But, oh, the scenery, the songs and the on-screen charisma. ABOUT A BOY Monday, 5 Star, 9pm
Adapted from a Nick Hornby novel, this 2002 comedy-drama is notable for launching the career of Nicholas Hoult (pictured, below) and for showing us that Hugh Grant could really act. The former plays the lonely and eccentric 12-year-old Marcus, while the latter is the feckless playboy who is embroiled with Marcus and his single mum, played by Toni Collette. THE WARRIOR Monday, Film4, 11.15pm
Irrfan Khan, the wonderful Indian actor who died last month at only 53, is best known in this country for The Life Of Pi and Slumdog Millionaire. But here he stars as a Rajasthan warlord in a Western-style epic that won two Baftas – including Best British film, despite being made in Hindi. ROAD TO MOROCCO Tuesday, Sony Movies Classic, 1.10pm
Bob Hope’s reputation has taken a bit of a battering of late so enjoy this reminder of just how good and funny he was when he teamed up with the laid-back Bing
Crosby to make the seven Road films, this being the third in the series. SENNA Tuesday, ITV4, 11.10pm
A brilliantly assembled documentary reminds us of how F1’s three times world champion Ayrton Senna lived and how he raced: with a fearless determination. A BEAUTIFUL MIND Wednesday, Film4, 6.10pm
Russell Crowe’s performance as the troubled mathematician John Nash divided opinion. But, hey, it’s directed by Ron Howard, won four Oscars – including Best Picture – and ambitiously addresses a story that combines advanced maths with serious mental illness. Worth a second look. FROM HERE TO ETERNITY Thursday, Sony Movies Classic, 9pm
An army private (Montgomery Clift) refuses to box for his unit, his sergeant (Burt Lancaster) embarks on an affair with his captain’s wife (Deborah Kerr), while his best friend (Frank Sinatra) finds trouble at every turn. THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU Friday, Sony Movies, 9pm
This adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story shouldn’t really work. But it does, mainly thanks to the screen chemistry forged by Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
