Biden says sorry in ‘you ain’t black’ row

- From Caroline Graham

DONALD Trump’s rival for US President has been forced to apologise for ‘insulting’ black voters.

Democrat contender Joe Biden, who will face Trump in November’s presidential elections, issued a grovelling apology after telling a black radio host: ‘If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.’

Last night, radio host Charlamagne Tha God – real name Lenard Larry McKelvey, 41 – whose show The Breakfast Club is one of America’s most influential broadcasts, slammed Mr Biden as being ‘a very intricate part’ of the systemic racism in America.

Mr Biden said he ‘deeply regretted’ his comment on Friday, saying: ‘I should not have been so cavalier. I’ve never, never, ever taken the African-American community for granted. I shouldn’t have been such a wise guy.’

Mr Biden, 77, Barack Obama’s former Vice President, has positioned himself as a pro-black candidate who has worked tirelessly for black rights throughout his political career. He has branded Mr Trump a racist for calling Mexican immigrants ‘rapists’ and referring to African nations as ‘s***hole countries’.

South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, the only black Republican senator, called Mr Biden’s comments ‘insulting’, adding: ‘I could not believe my ears that he would stoop so low to tell folks what they should do and what it means to be black.’

Mr Biden’s remark is the latest in a series of gaffes. Last month, he told a car factory worker ‘you’re full of s***’ during a row about gun control.

A new poll has put him eight points ahead of the President, but it has an 11 per cent margin of error.
