A state-run airline is a last resort

-

One letter last week suggested nationalising airlines, but I think that should be a last resort.

In 1970, I started working for BOAC [British Overseas Airways Corporation, the state airline and forerunner of British Airways] and it was a disgrace, run by people who knew nothing about airlines or aircraft. Most were basically medal-hunters, collecting OBEs and MBEs.

It was such a disgrace that people said BOAC stood for ‘Better On A Camel’. So true.

Masked confusion

So if you have travelled without a mask on public transport at any time until today you cannot be fined. But if you do the same from tomorrow onwards, you could be. It doesn’t make sense. Owen Welch, Stevenage

We mustn’t lose zoos

Alarm bells must be ringing all around the UK about the impoverishment being inflicted upon our society by the lockdown.

Some attractions are likely to disappear, never to reappear. One sector in particular has grabbed my attention: zoos.

There are so many wonderful zoos, and if these educational facilities close, we will never see their like again. And then there is the question of what happens to the animals. Many are endangered in the wild, thanks to habitat destruction and the profiteering of poachers. Denis Bruce, Glasgow

Look after Boris

If Boris Johnson needs naps during the day, it’s because he is still convalescing from his Covid experience. MPs should be even more supportive of him at this time while he recovers fully.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak should not be considered as leader – he doesn’t have the gravitas or enormous presence that Boris has, or the wisdom and maturity.

Lose Boris and the Tories lose the next Election.

Riding into danger

It’s great to see lots more people using bikes, but not great to see their habits, such as riding on pavements or not wearing helmets. You can tell who the new cyclists are as they have no consideration for others.

Please think twice before going on the road without Highway Code knowledge. Maybe all cycles sold should, by law, come with a helmet. Maureen Arnfield,
