- From Caroline Graham IN LOS ANGELES

IT WAS a role that turned Angelina Jolie into a global sex icon and ended Brad Pitt’s marriage to Jennifer Aniston.

Now Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge faces the daunting task of following in Jolie’s stiletto heels in a remake of the 2005 blockbuster Mr & Mrs Smith.

The 35-year-old will star opposite Donald Glover in a £ 30 million, eight- part series based on the movie about a suburban married couple who are both assassins. A source said: ‘It will be interesting to see how Phoebe makes the part her own. It’s hard to imagine anyone in that role who could be sexier than Angelina.’ The original film took more than £350 million at the box office. Pitt, who was married to Aniston at the time, admitted he ‘fell in love’ with Ms Jolie on set. They later married, but split in 2016.

Ms Waller- Bridge and Glover, who starred together in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story, announced the new series – for streaming giant Amazon Studios – on Instagram. Posing in a set of stylish silk tiger- print pyjamas, the actress was filmed standing seductively in a doorway watching Glover dance. ‘Introducing the new Mr & Mrs Smith 2022,’ she wrote.

The pair will play John and Jane Smith, a couple trapped in a mundane marriage who each secretly work as assassins until they find themselves tasked to kill each other. Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said: ‘ Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us to have these two forces of nature collaborating.’

Ms Waller-Bridge, who created Fleabag and Killing Eve, has become one of the most soughtafter stars in Hollywood. She co-wrote the new 007 film No Time To Die, described as ‘the most woke and hilarious Bond ever’. Glover, 37, is also known as rapper Childish Gambino.
