Richard Curtis co-writes a film that is, ambitiousl­y, both sequel and prequel to the 2008 original. So as Sophie prepares to reopen the Hotel Bella Donna we skip back to 1979 to learn more about her mother’s complicate­d love life. Amanda Seyfried and Lily James co-star.

Only Richard Gere would wear a white navy uniform while riding a motorbike, but here he is as brattish sh Zack Mayo, battling his way through the brutalitie­s of Navy Officer Candidate School with best friend Sid (David Keith) and new girlfriend Paula (Debra Winger). Yes, love still lifts you up…

A QUIET PLACE Monday, Film 4, 9pm

With the sequel now postponed until autumn, time to revisit John Krasinski’s brilliant – and exhausting­ly tense – original. Earth has been invaded by flesh-eating aliens who hunt by sound… bad news if you’re a couple with three children. Krasinski co-stars alongside real-life wife Emily Blunt.

CLOSER Tuesday, Sony Movies, 10.55pm

Patrick Marber’s stage play gets a glamorous Hollywood makeover with a cast that includes Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman (above) and Jude Law, but it loses nothing of its adult bite as we focus on two London couples and the dangers of confusing sex and love. Definitely for grown-ups.

ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ Wednesday, Film 4, 9pm

Denzel Washington picked up an Oscar nomination as the dedicated LA lawyer who’s worked happily behind the scenes for decades. But then his partner has a heart attack, plunging Roman into a business world he’s ill-suited for.

EDIE Thursday, BBC4, 9pm

Edie is 83 years old and newly widowed but b hasn’t given up on life, particular­ly pa on an old dream she once onc planned with her father – to climb clim the formidable Scottish mountain Suilven. So she packs an old camping bag and heads north. Sheila Hancock is lovely, the scenery gorgeous and the end result quietly charming.

STAN & OLLIE Friday, BBC1, 8.25pm

It’s the early 1950s and the glory days of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are long behind them, which explains why audiences are so small as they embark on a tour of British theatres. But then impresario Bernard Delfont intervenes and suddenly there is hope. Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly are brilliant as the comic duo.

WITNESS Friday, BBC1, 11.35pm

Harrison Ford is John Book, a city policeman charged with protecting the Amish boy who is the only witness to a murder. With the boy’s mother, all three retreat to Amish country, where the rules are strict, love blossoms and their lives are still in danger.
