De Gea haunted by Eriksen flashback as Lindelof struggles

- By Steven Davies

DAVID DE GEA admitted to having flashbacks of Christian Eriksen’s collapse in the Euros after seeing Manchester United team-mate Victor Lindelof suffer breathing difficulties at Carrow Road.

Worried United team-mates rushed to the Swedish defender’s aid when he dropped to his haunches under no pressure.

Medics then also raced on to the pitch as the stricken Lindelof pointed to his chest, complaining that he was struggling to breathe.

Lindelof looked in discomfort and after a few minutes of treatment was taken to the dressing room, where he underwent tests.

It was a harrowing moment and De Gea still sounded flustered when he spoke to Sky Sports at the end of the game.

‘I don’t know what was going on but it was like he was feeling his breathing,’ said the United keeper.

De Gea said it brought memories of the Euros flooding back when Denmark’s Christian Eriksen collapsed with a heart problem playing against Finland. Former Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero also collapsed with a heart problem playing for Barcelona earlier this season.

‘We’ve seen some players who are feeling unwell,’ said De Gea. ‘We’ve already seen Eriksen, Aguero, so it’s difficult to see your player acting like this. It was better to change. I hope he’s completely fine. The game, the football doesn’t matter. It’s life, to be safe.’

Coach Ralf Rangnick insisted Lindelof was OK after the defender was substituted. Rangnick said: ‘He had a condition, he was struggling to breathe. He felt pain in his chest but they did all the tests and everything seems to be OK.’
