Double-denim Meghan cheers her polo Prince

From Caroline Graham

- IN LOS ANGELES

SHE is never afraid to split opinion – now Meghan Markle has chosen to adopt another hugely divisive cause: double denim.

Though often derided as the preserve of cowboys and rednecks, the look is tipped to be the unlikely fashion trend of the summer.

So the Duchess was ahead of the curve when she donned high-waisted Doen jean shorts and a loose fitting denim shirt to cheer on Prince Harry at the polo in California on Friday.

But the casual look came with a touch of bling, too, as Meghan showed off her £19,000 gold Cartier Tank watch and £5,600 Cartier Love bracelet.

The ‘double denim’ look was propelled into the spotlight in 2001 when pop icons Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake – then a couple – wore matching outfits at an awards bash.

And now it’s staging another unlikely revival. Fashion bible

Vogue has declared: ‘Double denim is making a strong comeback and always delivers photoworthy style.’ And Libby Page, senior editor at Net-a-Porter said: ‘It’s an opportunity to inject a youthful and energetic feel into your wardrobe.’

Meghan, 40, was spotted putting a consoling hand on Harry’s knee after his team, Los Padres, lost the semi-final game

at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club.

The smiling and relaxed Duchess was also seen chatting to Harry’s close friend, team captain Nacho Figueras, an Argentine player who is also the ‘face’ of Ralph Lauren men’s fashion.

Aptly, given that it’s Father’s Day today, their team name, Los Padres, means ‘the fathers’.

The Sussexes are expected to

spend the day at home in their £13million Montecito mansion with three-year-old son Archie and daughter Lilibet, one.

Proud father Harry, 37, has been spotted wearing a ‘Girl Dad’ T-shirt while Meghan gave her husband a bench with a poem for his first Father’s Day. She later turned the poem into a children’s book, despite the strains with her own dad, Thomas.
