A YEAR after he was devastated by his beloved wife’s death from cancer, actor Damian Lewis’s smile suggests that a new romance may be blossoming.

The Eton-educated star was spotted smiling and chatting with US rocker Alison Mosshart as they travelled on a London Overground train last week, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

Later that day, the couple changed into evening wear and were seen leaving the Serpentine Gallery’s annual summer party, one of the highlights of London’s social season.

Looking dapper in a tweed blazer and baggy green slacks, Lewis, who has two teenage children from his marriage, still wore his wedding ring. Alison followed wearing a denim jacket and checked trousers with black heels.

A week earlier, the couple were photographed together at a fundraising party for London’s National Gallery but it is unclear when any relationship started.

A fellow passenger who spotted the 51year-old Homeland star with the blonde singer as they travelled across North London on Thursday said the couple looked ‘100 per cent romantically involved – like they were on a hot date’.

‘I wasn’t sure if it was him at first but his voice is so deep and distinctive,’ the witness said. ‘But after all he’s been through it is lovely to think he’s found someone new. They looked really happy together.’

The 43-year-old singer is the frontwoman of The Kills, the band she co-founded with guitarist Jamie Hince, ex-husband of Kate Moss. She is also a member of US supergroup The Dead Weather, formed by Jack White of The White Stripes.

Lewis’s late wife, Peaky Blinders actress Helen McCrory, died in April last year at the age of 52 after a secret battle with breast cancer. They had been married since 2007. The actor was approached for comment by The Mail on Sunday but had not responded last night. A spokesman for Ms Mosshart declined to comment.

When Miss McCrory died in April last year, Lewis revealed how his late wife had urged him to find love again, telling him and their son and daughter that she wanted ‘Daddy to have lots of girlfriends.’

Lewis added in the social media post: ‘She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air.’
