Can Jones fix England in a week?

- Mike Brown FORMER ENGLAND FULL-BACK

COURTNEY LAWES and Owen Farrell led the conversation in the huddle after the match, trying to pick the team up. Losing four games in a row is not nice but you cannot wallow in self-pity.

You have to grasp the positives to turn things around. Of course England’s players will be hugely disappointed because they will know that is a game they should have won.

Australia had so many curve balls thrown at them but England failed to capitalise. Players will be running through their errors on the flight to Brisbane and there will be a few nervous players going into the review meeting, because you never know what Eddie Jones will pick up on.

There was plenty of good stuff but there is also plenty to fix. The hard work will start at the set-piece. England were expected to dominate but Australia were going for them towards the end. They drilled England at the last scrum, even without their main man, Taniela Tupou. Eddie will be reminding the forwards about that all week and will have them working hard. I expect them to be much better in those areas on Saturday.

There is lots to like about the attack but they are missing that final bit to come away with points. I liked the way Farrell created space for Marcus Smith but it is still one pass away from clicking. They cannot rip it all up now. They just have to keep persevering and I’m sure they will get the rewards.

The big characters in camp, such as Jamie George and Danny Care, will help lift the spirits. We had a great time in Brisbane in 2016. We stayed at a big golf resort and had a load of massage tables set up on the beach for our recovery day. I will never forget the day we had to stop training because some kangaroos jumped on to the pitch! There was a big emphasis on enjoyment and, despite the results, that should be no different this week.

I expect there will be one or two changes for the second Test. I’m not convinced Joe Cokanasiga should be the starting wing. He has so much potential with his size but he doesn’t get into the game enough for me. I would like to see Tommy Freeman start. His power and gas and could become a real weapon in the long term.

Loads of people will be screaming for Henry Arundell to start because he looked electric when he came on. I’m a big fan but coming on in that final 10 minutes is hugely different from starting.

He showed that he can step up to the next level but you don’t want to rush him. He can have a huge influence if he is used against tired bodies at the end of the game. I would keep the rest of the team the same and have them fired up to put things right.

Overall, this Australia team were not great. They looked disjointed in attack at times but, like typical Aussies, they stuck in the fight and took their opportunities where England did not. But I’m still backing England to bounce back and win next week.
