Should we take a dip in a Budapest bath?
Q My wife and I are travelling to Budapest in June. Do you have any recommendations for a visit to a thermal spa?
Anthony Buchan, via email
A The Gellert Thermal Bath is wonderful. Connected to Gellert Hotel and by the River Danube, it features exquisite art nouveau architecture and is on the site of Ottoman Empire thermal baths. Entry from £23 (gellertbath.hu). Alternatively, the Szechenyi Thermal Bath is larger with outdoor pools and sun loungers, also from £23 (szechenyibath.hu). At both, massages are from £40 for 45 minutes. Swim caps required.
Q We are a couple in our late 70s. We are looking for a hotel in North Yorkshire with modest local walks and some nearby attractions.
Peter Lawton, via email
A Try Feathers Hotel in the pleasant market town of Helmsley, with comfortable rooms and a well-regarded restaurant, and close to fine walks in the North York Moors.
B&B doubles are from about £109 (feathershotelhelmsley.co. uk). For walks, see alltrails.com. Attractions include Helmsley Castle and the Cistercian monastery ruins at Rievaulx Abbey (english-heritage.org.uk).
Q I would like a holiday in Q Spain but I have MS, and while the condition is quite stable l do suffer from mobility problems and need to use a walking stick. Insurance quotes seem awfully high. Any advice?
K. Shaughnessy, Teesside
A Check out the firms on the ‘travel insurance if you have a medical condition or disability’ page at moneyhelper.org.uk. Ensure you have a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which offers state healthcare (nhs.uk). The MS Society also has great travel tips (mssociety.org.uk).
Q When is it cheapest to buy Eurostar tickets to Paris? We are thinking of going in late September. Can you recommend a reasonably priced hotel? Gillian Goshorn, via email
A Buy tickets as soon as possible – they are usually released six to eight months in advance. Return tickets in late September are about £95 (eurostar.com). For a hotel, you could try Hotel Apolonia Paris Mouffetard in the Latin Quarter, with doubles from about £140 (bestwestern.com).
Q I regularly go on holidays with friends, taking turns paying for meals, drinks and entrance fees. We try to keep a tab on who has paid for what but often lose track, which can be awkward. Can you suggest a better way than jotting it all down on paper?
Anne Kelly, Glasgow
A Yes, Splitwise.com is a clever app that allows you to add amounts paid in groups of two or more. It tallies up who has paid what to show who is in credit/debt.
Q I have been matched as a kidney donor for my sister. Surgery is later in the year and I have no immediate travel plans. Can you advise if I will be penalised with travel insurance costs because of the surgery?
D. Mayes, Belfast
A Travel insurance should not, in theory, cost more. However, contact your usual insurer and check with those recommended by Kidney Care UK (kidneycareuk.org). Good luck with the operation.
