Jimmy in talks over England coach role

- By Richard Gibson

JAMES ANDERSON has revealed England’s first Test of the 2024 summer will be his last as a player, but he could continue with the national team in a mentoring role.

Anderson confirmed the match against West Indies at Lord’s in July, the month of his 42nd birthday, will represent his farewell to an international career stretching back to 2002.

However, Ben Stokes’ side do not have a permanent bowling coach and it has long since been speculated that the 700-wicket Anderson would stick around to pass on his knowledge to the next generation once he hangs up his boots.

‘We have chatted about it and the talks are ongoing,’ Anderson said, after posting on Instagram that the July 10 fixture against the Windies would be his 188th and final Test — only legendary India batsman Sachin Tendulkar has appeared more.

‘I’m going to miss walking out for England so much.

But I know it is the right time to step aside and

I’m excited for the new challenges.’

The ECB employ Neil Killeen as lead bowling coach, but he divides his time between multiple England teams and is rarely seen on Test duty.

England coach Brendon McCullum has promoted a less prescriptive coaching style since taking over two years ago and Anderson’s relaxed demeanour, combined with his vast experience, aligns to that vision.
