WROE MAY YET GO - BUT IT WOULD BE WITH A BANG

- By Sam Elliott

NICKY WROE reckons FC Halifax’s FA Trophy success can power them to an instant National League return – but dropped hints that he may not be there to help them do it.

The Shaymen skipper lifted the iconic silverware last weekend but it couldn’t save their season, Town relegated over three weeks before after not quite having enough on the last day of the season to remain in Non-League’s top flight.

Jim Harvey’s arrival sparked the club into life and even their Trophy success wasn’t enough to convince the club’s board that he is the man to take them forward.

The Irishman was replaced by Billy Heath and Halifax may need to look for another captain.

Shop window

Wroe – comfortably the club’s best player this season – is expected to attract offers this summer and, out of contract, Heath will have to move heaven and earth to convince the midfielder to remain in the National League North.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a return to York City and accepts his future is up in the air.

Wroe told The NLP: “We’ll have to wait and see what happens. I want to be playing at the highest level I possibly can – I’m like everyone else in that respect.

“Hopefully over the summer I’ll get a few offers in and I’ll take it from there. It’s a bit up in the air at the moment but I’ll see what’s on the table.

“I’m out of contract, and Wembley was a bit of a shop window for me and for a few of the players.”

It’s sure to be a summer of change, not only will Heath – the departing North Ferriby manager – come in with fresh ideas, but he has work to do on the squad.

The only player under contract for next season is winning goalscorer Scott McManus, badly injured in the closing stages of the final.

New league, new manager and new players. It’ll be a close season of change in west Yorkshire for sure but Wroe reckons there is every chance of bouncing back.

Springboard

“It would have been nice to come to Wembley on the back of staying up but it wasn’t to be – at least we’ve managed to shake off the disappointment and give the supporters something to cheer about,” he said.

“We had to get our head around it. It wasn’t hard to get motivated for it, it’s Wembley and it’s a final – it’s what you dream about as a kid and if you can’t get yourself up for it there’s something not quite right. It was easy.

“This needs to fuel the club next season. It’s been hard, but I hope this generates a bit of a buzz around the town now and gives the fans a bit of belief that things are heading in the right direction.

“With a bit of luck, this can be a springboard for next year and the team can take this into the new season and use it to their advantage.”
