OFF TO LEAGUE, BUT JOHN IS STILL HUNGRY

-

JOHN GODDARD says there was no chance he was going to be pass up the opportunity of a second England C cap despite knowing his move to Swindon Town rules him out in the future.

Goddard, above right, made his debut in the 2-0 win against Ukraine in Kiev.

And his impressive performances – and 17 goals from midfield – for National League Woking have landed the 23-yearold a move to the League One Robins.

“I’m very passionate about playing for England and there was never a question of me not playing in this game,” said Goddard. “I had to make sure everything was done properly – which it was – and I’m excited. There’s so many benefits to being involved. The training’s great and it’s a chance to play for your country, but you also get conditioned well. At this point in the off-season it’s a good chance to stay sharp.

“The move has been the longterm goal and through that journey there have been rewards – this is one of them. But from my experience it’s so much better to play for England and win.”

Goddard started his career at Reading before dropping into Non-League football, first with Hayes &Yeading and then the Cards. He feels the football he’s played over the last four years has re-shaped his game.

“I’ve earnt my stripes and worked hard,” he said. “I’m a different player, have a different mentality and it’s a bit of a second chance for me. I want to take it with both hands.”
