DAGGERS BOSS STILL HAS GOT ASSOMBA FOR LONGA

- By Chris Dunlavy

DAGENHAM boss John Still is convinced he has unearthed another striking gem in Christian Assombalonga.

The forward – elder brother of £5m Nottingham Forest star Britt – has signed a two-year deal with the Daggers after netting 31 goals in 34 games for Ryman North side Waltham Abbey last season.

Still, 66, has a peerless track record for developing hitmen, with the likes of Paul Benson, Craig Mackail-Smith, Dwight Gayle and Andre Gray all plucked from obscurity before forging successful Football League careers.

And after beating off interest from Millwall, Brentford and Brighton to secure the 25-year-old’s signature, Still has backed his new boy to follow their lead.

“He’s a terrific player,” said Still, who returned for a second spell at Dagenham in December after two years at Luton.

“We watched him train a couple of times and that was all it took.

“We were more than happy to give him a go. There’s definitely something there.

“I’ve seen a lot of lads come through in my time. We took Paul Benson from White Ensign, Craig Mackail-Smith from Arlesey. They both went on to achieve great things and I think Chris has the same kind of potential.”

Still has also signed goalkeeper Elliott Justham from former side Luton.

“I took Elliot to Luton from East Thurrock United after getting good reviews about him,” explained Still.

“He worked very hard to get into the Luton first team. I rate him very highly.”
