Born: Birmingham, 1976 (age 39) Playing career: A striker, Byfield came through the academy at Aston Villa, making his debut in 1997 and playing a further nine games, also going on loan to Preston, Northampton, Cambridge and Blackpool, before a permanent switch to Walsall in 2000. An instant hit at the Bescot, he scored 17 goals in 92 matches and won promotion to the Championship in 2001, prompting a £50,000 move to Rotherham a year later. Byfield netted 23 goals in 74 games for the Millers, followed by five in 17 for Sunderland and 20 in 71 for Gillingham, where he suffered relegation to League One. A switch to Millwall then heralded a career-best 16 goals in the 2006-07 season, resulting in a £250,000 move to Bristol City. Top scorer with eight goals as the Robins reached the 2008 Championship play-off final, Byfield then had brief spells at Doncaster and Oldham before rejoining Walsall in 2009, after which he scored 12 times in 60 matches. After a trial with Port Vale, Byfield joined Conference side Telford in September 2012 but made only a handful of appearances before switching to Tamworth. In two seasons with the Lambs, he scored four goals in 32 games, until they were relegated to the Conference North in 2014. Byfield joined Solihull Moors as player-coach and also managed the Under-18 side. He was named manager of beaten Evo-Stik Prem play-off semi-finalists Redditch this month. Byfield also won six caps for Jamaica.
