YOU STOLE OUR FAMILY SILVER!

Wood accuse Posh in tapping-up row

- By Sam Elliott

PETERBOROUGH UNITED chairman Darragh McAnthony says his conscience is clear despite Boreham Wood counterpart Danny Hunter accusing his manager of underhand tactics to take highlyrated striker Morgan Ferrier from under their noses. Hunter unleashed a verbal volley at the League One club suggesting London Road boss Grant McCann approached their soon-to-sign player following a friendly match between the sides last Monday and offered him a head-turning trial. Peterborough have a rich history of setting Non-League players on their way to stardom – and McAnthony says there has been little wrong doing on their part.

Wood say Ferrier shook hands on signing for the National League club but he sent a text message to manager Luke Garrard saying he had been advised not to go through with the deal.

Respect

Hunter said McCann “took the family silver” after a match Posh won 1-0 and added: “We had agreed a deal with Morgan and shook hands. He was due to sign the next day.

“The boy sends a text to Luke Garrard on the Tuesday morning – an hour before he is due to sign – explaining he was approached by Grant McCann and others associ- ated with Peterborough. I felt we had looked after Peterborough’s directors, manager, players and supporters well and had no idea any impropriety had gone on.

“I believe neither (director of football) Barry Fry or Darragh, who seems a thoroughly decent guy, would have approved of Grant’s actions but it just felt like I had invited them into my family home, they left with smiles but failed to say they were leaving with the family silver.

“I’ve been a chairman here for 18 seasons and I suppose nothing should surprise me but I feel that Grant McCann has acted poorly in this instance. Experience tells me that everyone he meets on the way up, he’ll certainly meet on the way down.”

Ferrier, the 21-year-old former Crystal Palace prospect, continues to train with Peterborough as he looks to earn a deal.

McAnthony told The NonLeague Paper that more has been made of the incident than needed to be.

“It’s a bit of a storm in a tea cup,” he said.“He is getting his nickers in a twist over something that happens in football a lot.

“The fella is upset judging by his comments but we did nothing wrong bar take a young player on trial who wasn’t contracted to any other club.

“But I don’t like to see any NonLeague club upset with us. We have massive respect for Boreham Wood – as we do all clubs as we have shown over the years.

“We will make it up to Danny in the future, that’s for sure.”

Meanwhile, Boreham Wood continued their build up to the new National League season with an impressive 1-0 win over a strong Luton Town side on Tuesday night.
