STRUGGLING PAIR TAKE A SHARE OF THE SPOILS

- By Tom Feaheny

IN A battle of two of the bottom four sides, Guiseley and Woking could not be separated, claiming a share of the spoils in an entertaining encounter at Nethermoor Park.

The Lions looked good for their first win of the season when Adam Boyes hit a powerful 20-yard effort into the top corner two minutes into the second half.

Yet they were denied by Garry Hill’s Cards eight minutes from time when Fabio Saraiva’s header deflected off Dennon Lewis and wrongfooted keeper Jonny Maxted.

“We are now two games unbeaten, but we should have won this one,” said Guiseley caretaker chief Adam Lockwood.

“We had chances and on another day we would have gained our first win of the season.

“We need to move on from this and take the good things and hopefully that will mean we beat Chester on Tuesday.”

Similarly, Hill thought his side were also good for all three points, adding: “I actually thought we deserved to win this, we had a bit of luck with the goal we got but that was something you get, it was an open game and we both had some good chances.

“We are a young squad that keeps on learning and we can use this as a good experience.”

Guiseley were parading their new loan signing from Bradford City, Reece Webb-Foster, for the first time and it was he who had the first chance of the match when he cut inside and shot from just outside the area, only to see his effort blaze narrowly over the bar. The away side then began to weave their way back into the match with Maxted forced to push away an effort from Delano Sam-Yorke after he beat left-back Nicky Clee. A well-worked move by the hosts then saw them go close again – this time Clee was eventually found and on the turn he placed a shot that was turned away by Woking stopper Michael Poke. Poke was busy again minutes later to deny Guiseley’s Alex Purver’s powerful drive, diving full stretch to keep the effort out. Guiseley’s pressure finally told on 47 minutes when Clee found Boyes, who in turn smashed a fine effort into the top corner. And it should have been two when Jordan Preston was brilliantly denied by Poke, who somehow got a hand on a powerful effort. Woking, however, continued to press and got their reward on 82 minutes when Saraiva’s header was deflected in by Lewis. Indeed, the Cards might have nicked all three points in added time when Lewis saw his effort deflect just wide.
