Slippery Herring has final say

HUNGERFORD T 3 GOSPORT BORO 3

GOSPORT flew into a commanding lead but had to settle for a draw, in this classic game of two halves.

The steady rain made the pitch quick and Gosport took advantage, kicking down the slope playing slick football.

Warren Bentley was put through and only the feet of George Legg in the Hungerford goal deflected the ball past the upright. But from the corner, Legg’s punched clearance hit a defender and rebounded into the net.

The hosts’ Luke Williams had a good run and shot on 30 minutes, bringing the best out of Martin Rice as his leg diverted the ball for a corner.

The resulting corner was cleared and ended with Ben Wright, whose clipped shot flew into the corner for a deserved second.

The second half was Hungerford’s turn to attack and they battled back with two headed goals by Nat Jarvis, Diak John and Scott Rees with the assists.

Gosport were not finished and a clearance by their keeper in the 75th minute caused panic in the 18-yard box. A rash challenge resulted in a penalty which Bentley converted.

Hungerford threw everything at Gosport and were rewarded when a long throw in added time was only halfcleared and Ian Herring pounced to net a deserved equaliser.
