BELIEF A CATALYST DELIGHT AT HOME

- By Chris Pratt

Meppen-Walters firing over from 20 yards out.

Then Josh Amis was fouled down the right.

Lloyd fizzed the free-kick into the danger area and the ball eluded everyone but Clarke, who notched the Hatters’ second with the faintest of touches.

The visitors’ Harry Worley almost gifted County a third when his inexplicable backpass went to Amis, who was thwarted by Jay Lynch.

Salford joint-manager Anthony Morley was shocked with his side’s performance.

He said: “It was a game of football that we absolutely embarrassed ourselves in. I’m absolutely fuming, I’m raging. I’m embarrassed for everyone at the club.

“There was a big turnout from Salford, the supporters, the chairman, the owners and everyone connected to the club. I’ve never done this before but I can only apologise for that performance, it was shocking.”

Stockport County manager Jim Gannon felt a narrow loss against National North leaders AFC Fylde in midweek had boosted everyone at the club.

He said: “Stepping back from the match, the whole atmosphere was great.

“Something happened on Tuesday night that made people believe, made the fans believe and connect with the players. They were great today.”
