ALLEN’S GREEN LIGHT TO TRAVEL

- By Matt Badcock

GOAL machine Ross Allen believes Guernsey will be fine without him after deciding to go travelling – but says he’ll be back scoring in a Green Lions shirt soon.

Since the Channel Islanders entered a club into the National League system, the 29-year-old striker has scored 224 goals in 203 games.

But he will miss a chunk of this season after deciding it’s the right time to fulfill a lifelong dream.

Allen, who jets off next month, told the club’s website: “Travelling has been something I have wanted to do since before the formation of GFC, and I have put it off to concentrate on helping to drive the club forward on this amazing adventure. It was not an easy decision to make, as apart from family and friends, playing football for GFC is the biggest thing in my life.

“I’m currently in the position of having no personal commitments and so feel that it could be now or never in terms of having the flexibility to go away.

“Although it is not ideal missing the middle of the season, I feel that we have ample cover in the squad. There is enough exciting young talent coming through now so it is probably the best time for me to go away before it’s too late.”

Boss Tony Vance, who has led the club from Step 6 to Ryman South, added: “Ross deserves a break. He is well within his rights to pursue something he has wanted to do for a long time.”
