DERBY WIN THE TONIC FOR 500-UP DOSWELL

- By Michael Thurloway

PAUL Doswell celebrated his 500th match in charge of Sutton United in style as they humbled Surrey neighbours Woking at Gander Green Lane.

Three goals in the space of ten minutes either side of the break saw off a disappointing Cards side and lit the touch-paper for a carnival atmosphere on their long-serving boss’ milestone game.

“I was unaware it was my 500th game, so that was a nice surprise,” Doswell said. “And to win 4-1 in a local derby game, it was a great day.

“We were in charge of the game, the chances kept coming. We needed that second goal and we got it, and the third goal just after the break won us the game.”

Woking started the brighter of the sides but were made to pay for poor finishing on 22 minutes when Kevin Amankwaah fed the outstanding Roarie Deacon outside the box and the midfielder skipped past two defenders before firing beyond keeper Brandon Hall from 20 yards.

Sutton could have doubled their lead on 35 minutes as Chris Dickson beat Woking’s high defensive line but, through on goal, the striker hit Hall with his first attempt, and then skewed badly wide with his second.

It wasn’t long, however, until the U’s made one count after more good work by Deacon.

The former Crawley man glided past Dennon Lewis to the byline, putting a low ball across the face of goal that was only half-cleared, allowing Ross Stearn to fire home from 12 yards.

And things got doubly worse for Cards boss Garry Hill as Nicky Bailey and Craig McAllister scored within seven minutes of the kick-off.

Bailey sneaked in unmarked at the back post from Stearn’s corner on 47 minutes and, five minutes later, former Woking striker McAllister fired a bullet header into the bottom corner – Deacon again the provider as he did well to find space for a cross from the right wing. Woking, to their credit, plugged away and pulled one back on 75 minutes, as Matt Tubbs beat the offside trap from Charlie Carter’s chipped through ball, cleverly lifting the ball over Ross Worner and following up into the empty net. But the goal was mere consolation for the visitors, who were locked in the dressing room by Hill for over an hour afterwards, while Sutton continue looking up the table after a sixth home win from eight.
