GRIFFIN FLIGHTS IN WINNER

- By Peter Short

KETTERING T 1 CHIPPENHAM T 2

CHIPPENHAM came from behind to win a turgid match and pile the pressure on Kettering manager Marcus Law.

The only talking point of the first half was the collapse of the exterior wall in the away dugout at Latimer Park.

In the same week that the Poppies’ former home Rockingham Road caught fire, calls to sort out their new ground’s problems couldn’t be louder!

As for events on the pitch, the notable action all took place in the second half.

The home side took the lead four minutes after the interval when a sublime crossfield ball from Lewis Hornby found the path of former Forest man Spencer Weir-Daley, who bent his effort past Darren Chitty.

But Kettering couldn’t kill off the game, giving the visitors hope and allowing two mistakes to cost them victory.

The Bluebirds’ equaliser came on 67 minutes when a low corner from the right side evaded everyone and to the surprise of ex-Newport striker Andy Sandell, fell at his feet to poke home from three yards.

The winner came from Alan Griffin’s 25-yard freekick, which went through a poorly constructed Poppies wall with three minutes left.

Kettering need to rebuild on and off the field while Chippenham move up to third.
