GAFFER’S PENALTY HEROICS GET SIDE THROUGH

- By Brian Waters

FLEET Town player manager Craig Davis led by example to see his side through to the next round of the FA Trophy as he scored a second-half penalty to cap a 2-1 win over Bideford.

After a feisty first half, which saw Bideford’s Ben Watson sent off for a poor challenge just before the break, the visitors went ahead from the spot as Billy Tucker slotted home.

Fleet then drew level through Josh Harfield’s header to set up a grandstand last quarter.

And it was Davis who was the hero, scoring from the spot on 76 minutes before his side held out for the victory.

Horsham produced a dogged away display to seal safe passage into the next round, Charlie Farmer’s first-half header and a late Scott Kirkwood penalty securing the 2-0 win at Potters Bar Town.

Wantage Town came out on top in a five-goal thriller with Kidlington.

Harvey Scholes’ strike saw Wantage take a 1-0 lead into the break, one which they doubled seven minutes after the restart through Hulbert Thomas.

Louis Joyce pulled one back for the hosts but captain Mark Francis restored Wantage’s twogoal advantage, leaving Henry Owen’s header counting for little.

Hanwell Town eased past Bedford Town as four different players chipped in with a goal to seal the 4-0 win.

Mark Jamison and Calum Duffy scored to give the hosts a comfortable lead at the break, before Will Turl and Tyler Christian-Law added gloss to the performance in the second half.

Elsewhere, Marlow edged Brentwood Town 2-1 thanks to goals from Marcus Mealing and Chris Ovenden, while Matt Cripps bagged a 79th minute winner as Brightlingsea Regent beat Dereham Town by the same scoreline.

And Maldon & Tiptree ran out 3-1 winners at home to Great Wakering

Rovers – Rhys Henry, Sam Newson and Adam Mills all on target.
