WASTEFUL CITY MADE TO PAY BY THE ROCKS

- By John Shepperd

OXFORD C 0 E THURROCK 1

OXFORD were left to rue their missed chances after going down by the only goal of the game to visitors East Thurrock United.

Early on, the home side’s Godfrey Poku sent a ball into the middle to find Shaun McCauley who pulled his effort wide.

A strong strike from the Rocks’ Rhys Harris carried straight to the keeper and a free-kick by City’s Scott Davies was collected by James Roberts, but his effort was blocked.

Play was mostly contested in the middle of the park with neither side taking overall control of the proceedings.

Tom Winter’s strong strike was inches wide followed by a second effort from the same player as they failed to make their mark.

East Thurrock were fortunate on two occasions when scrambles in the area created a few problems but on both times they were able to cope with the situation.

City keeper Jack Stevens made an excellent save to deny Tom Wraight’s efforts and prevent the Rocks from taking the lead.

Chances for City continued to arrive but their finishing was sadly lacking.

The three points arrived for East Thurrock when a neat move allowed James Walker space to fire home and leave City empty handed.
