LOCK’S KEY TO A BRIGHT FUTURE

- By Matt Badcock

FLOODLIGHT failure may have held them up, but Guiseley finally got their first win of the season by thrashing York City – and boss Adam Lockwood says the way they coped with the blackout showed him all he needs to know about his squad.

The rock-bottom Lions – who sacked Mark Bower in August after five opening National League defeats – waited nearly two months to take maximum points, and they did it in some style with a 6-1 romp.

But their night was scuppered when the lights went out five minutes before half-time with the scoreline 4-1. It took nearly 40 minutes to restore power and Lockwood admits it was a tricky test.

“Everything I’ve been through in my career, with the situation we’ve been in, I think it was the most stressful time of my career,” Lockwood told The NLP.

“When you’ve put so much into trying to get a positive result and then things like that happen, you have to manage yourself right.

“You get your momentum knocked out of you and then you have to play the five minutes before half-time. That was a massive five minutes to get through.

“It was a test for the group with the problems we’ve had, but they came through with flying colours. Not just because we won 6-1, but the way they conducted themselves.”

Ex-Redditch star Jermaine Hylton, who has joined on loan from Swindon, and former Oldham Athletic forward Jake Cassidy, both scored on their debuts.

Lockwood, 34, says the win is nothing less than his team deserve for their performances this season – and hailed the unity at Nethermoor Park.

“Everybody involved at the club has been great,” Lockwood added. “We’ve all pulled together.”
