MARCUS GETS A BIG CHANCE
MARCUS BIGNOT is expected to be unveiled as Grimsby Town’s new manager this week.
The Solihull Moors boss was thrown into the air by his squad as they celebrated yesterday’s FA Cup first round 2-2 draw with Yeovil Town.
Bignot watched the National League Moors come from two goals behind to the League Two side, who were reduced to ten men.
Ahead through Ryan Hedges and Otis Khan, the Glovers had Kevin Dawson sent off and midfielder Jack Byrne’s double booked a replay.
Vacancy
However, it looks like Bignot, 42, will have a new job by then as he fills the vacancy left by Paul Hurst.
Hurst guided the Mariners to promotion through the National League play-offs last season by beating Forest Green at Wembley, but has now moved to League One side Shrewsbury Town.
In Bignot, Grimsby are getting one of Non-League’s brightest young managers. Since taking over in 2011 he has been credited with transforming the club both on and off the pitch, culminating in winning the National League North title last season.
They are currently 15th in the table, nine points above the relegation zone.
The former Kidderminster, Millwall and Queens Park Rangers defender has also overseen great success in the women’s game with Birmingham City Ladies.
Bignot, who doesn’t have a contract with the Moors, didn’t confirm his departure following yesterday’s game, but the scenes at the final whistle suggested he was bidding farewell to Solihull supporters.
He said: “I went over to the fans at the end to thank them for their support. They’ve been great throughout my management career at this club.
“It’s a special place and it will always have a place in my heart. For now though I just want to concentrate on this performance and enjoy the evening. I think I deserve that for the season and year we’ve had.
“Days like this in the FA Cup don’t come around too often so today isn’t about me, it’s about this football club and the result we’ve achieved.”
