NEWTON AT THE DOUBLE FOR LAMBS

- By Matt Panter

TAMWORTH 2 DARLINGTON 1

DANNY NEWTON’S double inspired Tamworth to a rousing second-half comeback as they ended Darlington’s unbeaten away record.

The result means the Lambs have beaten the league’s top two in the past seven days, having ended Fylde’s unbeaten start the previous Saturday.

They had to come from behind after the Quakers got off to a dream start. Terry Galbraith converted from the penalty spot after Jack Lane fouled Mark Beck.

The day could have got better for the visitors but Lambs keeper James Belshaw did well to bravely block Nathan Cartman’s close-range effort.

In an opening 45 minutes of few chances, the home side finally settled and went close in first-half stoppage time as Ross Dyer was thwarted by Darlington keeper Peter Jameson.

Tamworth had to wait until four minutes of the second half to level as Newton headed home his ninth of the season from Greg Mills’ corner.

The Lambs completed the turnaround on 57 minutes as Newton smashed home from the edge of the area.

Mills and Dyer both went close to adding to their lead while, at the other end, Cartman’s shot was blocked by Andy Burns.

Dyer then struck the post for Tamworth, who had to defend well to survive, with Belshaw saving a David Syers effort.
