Weir-Daley powers Poppies seven up

- By Nigel Howlett

SPENCER WEIR-DALEY scored four goals in consecutive weeks as Kettering ran riot against St Ives.

The prolific forward, who hit a quadruple against Market Drayton Town in an FA Trophy qualifier last Saturday, was on fire as the Poppies put seven past a woeful Saints side who managed one shot of note throughout the entire game.

The first half was a relatively even affair, but the hosts managed to gift their visitors two goals with huge defensive errors.

Kettering’s first goal arrived on seven minutes as Scott Sinclair tried to bring down a long ball into the box only to be robbed by James Brighton who hammered in.

The second strike arrived on 34 minutes, coming from another calamitous mistake as Ives duo Liam McDevitt and Charlie De’ath collided, leaving Weir-Daley to open his account with a tap in.

Monserrat international Weir-Daley helped himself to three more goals in the space of seven minutes, first hammering home a loose ball on 55 minutes.

The former Nottingham Forest, Notts County and Boston United striker completed his hat-trick two minutes later, rattling in a spot kick off the underside of the crossbar.

Weir-Daley – who joined the Poppies from local rivals Corby Town, initially on loan in February – then netted his fourth on 62 minutes after he was allowed to run into space and onto the end of a low Liam Canavan free-kick into the box to slot home from close range.

The route was completed by two more goals in the last ten minutes.

First substitute Rene Howe ran clear onto a throughball from Matthew Barnes-Homer to make it six on 80 minutes.

Finally, Wilson Carvalho saved the best goal of the game for last with a dipping 25-yard drive on 89 minutes.
