LUKE: WE’RE READY FOR A BIG SCALP BOREHAM WOOD v NOTTS COUNTY

- By Sam Elliott

PARTY: Boss Luke Garrard wants more celebrations today LUKE GARRARD believes Boreham Wood have never been in a better position to finally beat a Football League club.

The Wood have achieved a lot in the past decade – ten years ago they were playing in the Southern League Division One East – but thanks to chairman Danny Hunter’s backing they are now aiming for promotion from Non-League’s top flight.

But one thing that has eluded the Hertfordshire club is taking the scalp of a big boy in the FA Cup.

They will get the chance to remedy that when Notts County visit this afternoon but the League Two club say there is no chance they will be taking the National Leaguers lightly.

Garrard has guided the club to five wins in six matches and he reckons the club could have its best chance yet of grabbing some headlines with a big upset.

He said: “We know the qualities they have. We have a report and know what they’re going to offer, but we’re in good shape ourselves. It’s a massive opportunity for the club. We are yet to beat a League side – getting to the third round is what we all aim for, it’s what we hope to achieve. We know how much an FA Cup run would mean.

“We took Carlisle United to a replay three years ago, we have had a couple of occasions where we went close but if we play our game we’ve always got a chance.”

Boreham Wood got a special visitor this week – the FA Cup trophy itself !

Garrard, the former AFC Wimbledon rightback, said touching the famous trophy whetted the appetite.

“We’ve spent some time with the FA Cup this week and it only added to the excitement for Sunday,” he added.

“Funnily enough the furthest I went as a player in the competition was for Swindon Town against Notts County back in 2003 in the third round.

“It would be great to finally get past them!”
