BURR AIMS TO CREATE NEW COLT HEROES

- By Matt Badcock

STEVE BURR warmed up his Southport squad for tomorrow’s Lancashire derby with League One Fleetwood Town by drawing inspiration from legendary racehorse Red Rum. The Sandgrounders boss and his team were on Ainsdale Beach for a training session on Thursday – the same sand where the threetime Grand National champion was taken for training gallops. It was all part of Burr’s plan to break up a long week ahead of the game with the Cod Army in front of BT Sport’s live TV cameras. “I thought if it’s good enough for Red Rum, it’s good enough for us,” Burr told The NLP. “It was great, we enjoyed it, and then we took the lads for a bite to eat afterwards which was nice. It was to do something a bit different really and break the week up, especially with us not playing Saturday. “We’ve watched Fleetwood a few times – they’re a good footballing side. We know it’s going to be difficult, but it’s the FA Cup. As has proved before, anything can happen. The town is buzzing about it.” Burr – whose side are unbeaten in four – has fond memories of the FA Cup as both a player and manager. His most recent success was in 2014 when his Chester side upset Southend United. But he had his first taste of success just a few weeks into his first management job at Nuneaton Borough when they knocked out Stoke City 16 years ago. Burr, who had a month as caretaker boss before the game, said: “I remember one of the directors saying to me that if we managed to beat Stoke the job was definitely mine! I’ll never forget that. I thought, ‘Well, at least that’s something.’ “They actually gave me the job leading up to the first game. We managed to beat them in the replay. That was live on Sky and virtually saved the club at the time.”
