WADDOCK IN A REF ROW AS U’S MAKE 10 MEN PAY

- By Michael Thurloway

CAPTAIN Jamie Collins scored both goals against his former club as Sutton United continued their imperious home form in a controversial victory over ten-man Aldershot Town.

The centre-back struck twice in the second half as Sutton benefited from Jake Gallagher’s sending off for the Shots shortly before half-time.

The match ended a run of six league games without a win for Sutton, but Shots boss Gary Waddock was left visibly incensed by the decision to send off Gallagher, which ultimately resulted in a fourth defeat in five matches.

“I don’t want to be asked about the sending off because I don’t want to get into any trouble regarding it and I don’t think I should,” Waddock said.

“Nothing has gone right for us in November so I’m pleased to see the back of it to be honest. It’s been a very tough period.”

Quite what referee David Rock saw when brandishing the England C midfielder his fourth red card in Aldershot colours on the stroke of half-time was unclear, but it did give Sutton a clear advantage after the break, exposing an Aldershot squad which was supplemented by just three substiutes.

“Gallagher being sent off changed the game,” admitted Sutton boss Paul Doswell. “We got that man advantage and used it well second half.

“It was a very strange game, incident packed – it was a big win for us.”

Gallagher was given his marching orders after tempers flared when Bedsente Gomis took umbrage to the nature of the Aldershot man’s challenge.

Gomis and Idris Kanu were also shown yellow cards for their involvement in the melee.

Up to that point, it was the Hampshire side who had the better chances with Matt McClure twice testing former Aldershot keeper Ross Worner. Gallagher’s red card turned the game dramatically and Collins’ first goal, after 58 minutes, was a simple one as he headed past keeper Mark Smith from a wellplaced free kick. At the time, the Shots were down to nine men with defender Jack Saville receiving treatment for a cut. Aldershot’s best chance to reply came on 75 minutes, as sub Iffy Allen found himself through on goal after an advantage, but hesitated too long and Worner smothered. And Collins made him pay when bringing down a high ball, turning and firing home past Smith to seal the points.
