RAVENS PILE ON MISERY FOR MILLS’ POOR YORK

- By Machel Hewitt

PROUD Neil Smith lavished praise on his dominant Bromley side as they made it five league games unbeaten against a desperately poor York City.

The Ravens took the lead through Jack Holland in the opening five minutes and never looked back as further strikes by George Porter and Adam Cunnington capped a comfortable win.

“The work ethic in this game, and the last five, has been brilliant,” Smith beamed, “From the very first whistle to the last, every single player put in a shift and that was the key to today’s result.”

Centre-back Holland gave the Ravens the perfect start when glancing in Blair Turgott’s freekick under little to no pressure to put the home side in front.

But, in truth, it was York who reacted the better and they came close to an equaliser on 13 minutes but Charlie Cooper’s shot deflected off teammate Simon Heslop to safety when he was well set in the penalty area.

Three minutes later, loanee Jake Charles – grandson of John Charles — went close to a debut goal but could only fire wide after being put through by Alex Whittle.

And Cooper went even closer on 17 minutes as he headed Whittle’s cross against the post with Alan Julian well beaten.

But York then shot themselves in the foot when they conceded from Bromley’s next effort on goal. Porter did well to run on to Joe Anderson’s through ball and slot beyond Kyle Letheren to double the Bromley lead.

Bromley could have gone in three goals to the good, at half time, as twice Tobi Sho-Silva spurned opportunities. Dave Martin’s 25 -yard effort was parried by Letheren into the path of Silva but he was equal to Silva’s follow up. In injury time Silva managed to break free of the static York defence but he failed to get the ball out from under his feet shooting tamely at Letheren. York started the second half the brighter but it was Bromley who struck the killer blow on 78 minutes – substitute Adam Cunnington was given the freedom of the penalty area to head in Turgott’s corner. Disconsolate York boss Gary Mills was frank in his assessment afterwards, commenting: “We gave away sloppy goals and it put us on the back foot but we’ve got to get it right and turn it around as soon as possible.”
