BRUNO’S DEALT A KO BLOW TO GULLS

- By Steve Harris

IT may not have been pretty, but it was effective for Boreham Wood as they ended their six-match winless run with victory at Torquay.

A second half strike from Bruno Andrade proved to be the difference as Wood moved up to tenth in the table and manager Luke Garrard admits to drawing inspiration from Danny Cowley’s achievements with Braintree Town last season.

“I think what Danny Cowley did at Braintree last season is a huge inspiration for us,” said Garrard.

“They’ve given everyone the belief that if you give yourself an opportunity there is a chance you can progress up the league.”

At the same time, opposite number Kevin Nicholson was extremely disappointed with his side’s display, especially after their festive double header that saw them hit nine goals past high flying Forest Green Rovers.

“It’s another prime example of us beating ourselves,” said Nicholson.

“I’ve just said it to them now, they turned up for training on Wednesday after two good performances thinking they’ve made it.

“We are not good enough to be able to turn up at 80 per cent, we have to be at 100 per cent. If you turn up thinking you’ve cracked it this is what you get.”

Torquay skipper Courtney Richards was forced to hack an effort from Wood debutant Jason Williams off the line on ten minutes, before Sam Chaney came within inches of putting the Gulls in front – firing an effort against the outside of the post on the stroke of half-time.

Jamie Reid and Ben Gerring forced saves from Wood keeper Grant Smith as the hosts ploughed forward after the break.

But it was Wood who stole all three points on 62 minutes when Andrade cut in from the right and hit a curling drive past Torquay keeper Brendan Moore.
