LEGEND BROWNE MISSED BY MANY

- By Sam Elliott

NON-LEAGUE football is in mourning following the death of popular former manager and player Steve Browne.

Browne, in charge at Dover Athletic, Boreham Wood and Slough Town among others, lost his battle with cancer last Sunday.

He also served Wealdstone, Potters Bar, Aveley, Enfield Town and Grays in a fantastic career which always saw him manage with a smile.

Browne had been unwell for some time but since being diagnosed with bowel cancer, he became an ambassador for the Men’s Health Forum. He last year supported the charity’s Know The Score campaign after they teamed up with the PFA and the League Managers’ Association to raise awareness.

Even after being diagnosed, he remained committed to the NonLeague game and could still be found at matches despite his poor health.

Leading the tributes was Michael Harvey, the former member of the So Solid Crew who worked with the 45-year-old at a number of clubs.

“I can’t believe it,” the pop star tweeted, alongside a picture of his friend. “You believed in me and you were a true gent. The best football manager I’ve had and who always got the best out of me.”

Slough Town released a statement on their website, paying their respects to Browne after he represented the club as a player, a manager and a coach.

The statement read: “All at Slough Town were saddened to learn of his passing after a battle with cancer.

“Steve played in the Football League before joining the Rebels as assistant manager to Graham Roberts in 1998. He later took over the management position and also made 45 appearances for the club. He left in 2003 to take up a position at Dover.

“Our thoughts are with Steve’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
