The Non-League Football Paper

City and Sutton are both League!

-

ARE Lincoln City and Sutton United League or Non-League clubs? Answer: They are both League clubs!

When I started watching football there was the Football League: 92 clubs and a closed shop. Year after year the bottom clubs had to apply for re-election, and got it, until finally Peterborough United broke through. All the other clubs were Non-League clubs.

Then the Alliance was set up, which finally led to automatic promotion between the Alliance and the Football League.

The pyramid followed with automatic promotion and relegation and at some point during this process the distinction between League and Non-League clubs withered away. It is a term which has outlived its usefulness.

If clubs not among the top 92 are Non-League, then they should be playing in the National Non-League, and not the National League. MALCOLM M. CAPORN via email

I’D like to say a big thank you to Penybont FC (Welsh League Division 1) and, in particular, to Emlyn and Geraint, for their hospitality on my visit last Saturday.

On learning that I had travelled some distance to watch their game against Haverfordwest, I was served complementary sausage and chips to fortify me for my return journey.

May I wish all at Penybont FC an excellent season and recommend them to all prospective visitors. STEVE CRUDGE
