Stafford finally end winless run

STAFFORD R 3 WORKINGTON 2

- By Chris Elsley

STAFFORD Rangers won for the first time in six games against nine-man Workington.

The home side started brightly and went ahead on four minutes through Kyle Perry after the visiting defence failed to clear their lines.

Workington’s first look in came through Robert Wilson whose free-kick skimmed the side netting before Tim Sanders missed a chance to add to the Stafford score when he miskicked in front of goal.

But Stafford did extend their lead on 25 minutes when Levi Reid scored from the rebound after Aaran Taylor had saved the initial penalty after Jacob Simpson had been sent off for hauling down Izak Reid.

Workington started their come back when Joshua Calvert headed home at the back post on 38 minutes, then David Symington took them in on level terms with an added time penalty after Kieran Morris had been harshly penalised for tripping Scott Allison.

Stafford restored their lead within a minute of the restart though, Josh Gordon holding off two Workington defenders before holding his composure to fire past Taylor.

Gordon missed a good chance for a fourth when he headed over but Stafford’s lead looked more assured when Workington’s Conor Tinnion was then sent off for kicking the ball in the direc- tion of the linesman in an show of dissent.

Brothers Levi and Izak Reid both came within inches of adding to the score and Perry headed wide.

The closest Workington came to an equaliser was when sub Samuel Joel fired just wide but Stafford were worthy of their win.

The result moves Stafford onto 43 points for the season although they have games in hand on those teams around them.
